This is the second collection in the series History of British Economic Thought which brings together six classic works on political economics by leading British writers of the 17th and 18th centuries. William Petty, the father of modern economics, and the Bristol merchant John Cary both represent 17th century views of economics, statistics, trade and the employment of the poor. Their position as leading and influential authors justifies their inclusion in the collection. The innovative books by Robert Wallace and James Steuart represent works of prime importance in economic theory. The chapter by Steuart was the first British attempt at establishing a systematic view of political economy. Both books were important precursors to the work of Malthus. The two remaining titles represent the major contributions to economics by the Irish philosopher George Berkeley and the English utilitarian Jeremy Bentham.
