Britain, Israel and Anglo-Jewry, 1949-57 is based on a profusion of primary material from the Israel State Archives, Jerusalem; the Ben-Gurion Archive, Sede Boker; the Public Records Office, London; and the National Archives, Washington; in addition to twenty-six public archives and fourteen collections of private papers. Dr Aridan also collected thirty-one personal and collected testimonies from policy makers, senior Foreign Office officials, Israeli diplomats and attaches and Anglo-Jewish leaders. Previous research on the period in question has examined primarily the military aspects with scant reference to other aspects of Anglo-Israeli relations such as the relationship between Anglo-Jewry and the State of Israel. The years 1949-57 are largely terra incognita compared to those before 1948 and after 1967. This book focuses on the bilateral and multilateral relations between Britain, the 'former proprietor' and Israel, the 'successor state', during the period following their armed clash in January 1949, to Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza and the Sinai in March 1957.
