Richard Caves (1998) states that dead business unitstell no tales (p. 8), and by extension one couldargue that dead business relationships also tell notales. However, it is the purpose of this book totell the tales of dead business relationships in hopethat other businesses can learn from their mistakes.Business relationships are a vital part of business. With the globalization of the economy businesseswill have some form of international contact. Forbusinesses with limited resources or no experienceoften the most efficient means to expand their reachoverseas is to enter into a business relationship. This study examined the variables most connected withthe propensity of business relationships to dissolve. The results suggest that variables such as size ofthe parent firms, political stability, marketsophistication, number of partners, number of CEOs inthe joint venture and average years of experience inthe host country all seem to have the greatest impacton joint venture propensity to dissolve. The studyalso offers several suggestions for business lookingto establish international joint ventures.
