This volume is an up-to-date report on progress in the understanding of brain edema, with a spectrum reaching from most recent molecularbiological findings to respective clinical developments. Major topics deal with (a) the blood-parenchymal cell border under normal and pathological conditions causing brain edema, (b) neuron-glial interactions and their disturbances in tissue damage, (c) formation, propagation and resolution of brain edema, and finally (d) treatment of vasogenic and cytotoxic brain edema. In the basic science approaches emphasis is given to newly discovered molecules, such as vascular endothelial growth factor, which might control permeability of the blood-brain barrier, e.g. in brain tumors. The complex issue of mediator compounds of secondary brain damage is further developed as to its manyfold involvement, for example in barrier dysfunction, cell swelling, disturbances of the microcirculation, and others. The report further contains comprehensive assessments of edema pathophysiology by advanced technologies, such as in-situ hybridization on the one hand side or NMR-diffusion imaging on the other. Novel forms of treatment acquiring increasing specificity represent a central focus.
