After sitting for hours, Adam's connecting flight to Riyadh was finally announced. As the jet lifts off the tarmac and rises to cruising level, Adam's thoughts drift back to the thousands still crowded in the airport below waiting for flights out of Jeddah International. Adam, like most westerners arriving in the Kingdom that day, did not know it was Hadj season and the start of a new millennium on the Islamic calendar. Anticipation was running high that something special could happen at Mecca. For this reason, more pilgrims than usual were making the pilgrimage that year. But at that very moment there was a handful of individuals already at Mecca preparing to take over of the Grand Mosque and announce the establishment of a new Islamic state. Their leader claimed to be the foretold Mahdi who, according to an ancient prophecy, would appear at Mecca and lead his followers first against hypocritical Muslims and then on a conquest of the entire world in the name of Allah. Although all Muslims know about this prophecy, the assault that will occur two weeks after Adam's arrival in the Kingdom will take everyone by surprise but especially the Saudi government. If their plan succeeds, Adam's life and the lives of all non-Muslims in the Kingdom will be endangered. Yet, even if this attempt fails and the leader is proven to be a fraud, Muslims will still be expecting the prophecy to come true one day. When Adam learns the reasons for the assault on the Grand Mosque he will have to make several important decisions. Will he remain in the desert kingdom or return to the United States? Should he and his fiance cancel their plans to marry and live together in Saudi Arabia? Just how big of a risk would any westerner be taking by living in a part of the world where the rise of an Islamic state bent on world domination is ever present? On the other hand, if the prophecy does come true would it make any difference where in the world a person lived?
