The Savior spoke to His audience at their level of sophistication. To the religious leadership of His day, he quoted Holy Scripture. To Pilate, He spoke of law and the underlying nature of truth. To the common people, He spoke in common terms, and quoted popular folk sayings. In a similar way, the apostles realized that there were different levels of understanding in the first Christians as well. St Paul tells the Corinthians that as babies they must have milk to survive, but will receive solid food, deeper teachings, later as adults. They would not be able to grasp the deeper, theoretical aspects of the Gospel message until they had a firm grasp of more fundamental teachings. We each have our own learning styles, and varying ability to grasps the messages. Great dramatists layer their works so there's something for each level of understanding, from those who understand symbolic language and allegory to those who only perceive an action story. How much better, then, does The Lord knows that not all have the same spiritual capacity or insight. We would do well to pray for increased understanding of the milk of the Christian life so that we will find the joy in the solid food of the Kingdom that awaits us. In that spirit, we offer the children the warm, sweet mother's milk of these simply-told Bible stories, in the earnest hope that the listener and reader are built up and strengthened for the New Life.
