Walter Benjamin, geb. 1892 in Berlin, studierte in Freiburg i. Breisgau Philosophie, Germanistik und Kunstgeschichte. Nach Beginn des ersten Weltkrieges setzt er sein Studium in München und dann in Bern fort. 1933 emigriert er nach Paris. Nach der Besetzung Frankreichs und kurzzeitiger Internierung entschließt er sich in die USA zu internieren. An der spanischen Grenze wartet er aber vergeblich auf ein Visum. Da seine Auslieferung an die Geheime Staatspolizei droht, nimmt sich Walter Benjamin im spanischen Küstenort Port Bou mit einer Überdosis Morphium das Leben.
