Beowulf is the oldest and most complete epic poem in any non-Classical European language. Our only manuscript, written in Old English, dates from close to the year 1000. Tom Shippey holds the Alter J. Ong S.J. Chair of Humanities at Saint Louis University. He has published repeatedly on Beowulf and Old English peotry generally. His colleague Professor Andreas Haarder published the groundbreaking study Beowulf: the Appeal of a Poem (1975).
