Manufacturing is the basic industrial activity generating real value. Cutting and abrasive technologies are the backbone of precision production in machine, automotive and aircraft building as well as of production of consumer goods. We present the knowledge of modern manufacturing in these technologies on the basis of scientific research. The theory of cutting and abrasive processes and the knowledge about their application in industrial practice are a prerequisite for the studies of manufacturing science and an important part of the curriculum of the master study in German mechanical engineering. The basis of this book is our lecture "Basics of cutting and abrasive processes" (4semester hours/3 credit hours) at the Leibniz University Hannover, which we offer to the diploma and master students specializing in manufacturing science.

O autorze

Hans Kurt Tönshoff war bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2002 langjähriger Direktor des Instituts für Fertigungstechnik und Werkzeugmaschinen (IFW) in Hannover. Er ist einer der führenden deutschen Ingenieurwissenschaftler in der Fertigungstechnik, u.a. wurde er aufgrund seiner außerordentlichen Verdienste um die Produktionswissenschaft zum Ehrenmitglied der Internationalen Forschungsgemeinschaft für Produktionstechnik (CIRP) berufen. Prof. Tönshoff ist seit 1975 aktives Mitglied der CIRP, gehörte 1997 bis 2000 dem Präsidium an und war von 1998 bis 1999 Präsident. Zudem war Prof. Tönshoff von 1989 bis 1995 Vizepräsident der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), sowie Mitglied des Wissenschaftsrates der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (1980 - 1984) und Beauftragter für Forschung und Technologie des Landes Niedersachsen (1984 - 1986). Des Weiteren ist der 68-Jährige Träger des Bundesverdienstkreuzes der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und Ehrendoktor der Universitäten Erlangen-Nürnberg und Thessaloniki. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Berend Denkena promovierte 1992 am Institut für Fertigungstechnik und spanende Werkzeugmaschinen (IFW) der Universität Hannover. Ab 1996 führte er bei Gildemeister Drehmaschinen den Bereich Entwicklung und Konstruktion. 2001 wurde er als Leiter des Instituts für Fertigungstechnik und Werkzeugmaschinen der Universität Hannover als Nachfolger von Herrn Prof. Tönshoff berufen.
