To answer this question, healthcare expenditure in Austria in recent years is examined, with the analysis focusing on the sub-area of back pain. First, the socio-economic significance of back pain in Austria is analysed, with a detailed look at healthcare expenditure in recent years. Second, potential savings are identified by breaking down the fee schedules of selected health insurance funds with regard to the diagnosis and treatment of back pain.
