What follows is the story of two boys, who, having lost their mother and grandmother, are separated by their uncaring father in 1923 Munich, Germany; an unfortunate chain of events is brought about. Four-year-old Viktor is sent to America to live with an aunt and uncle in the affluence of Hollywood, California. Hans, the eldest, at eight, is sent to a Catholic orphanage in Augsburg, Germany and a life of austerity until he is adopted by an Austrian family five years later. Though Hans tries to keep in contact with Viktor, the miles, years, and an uncle who wants Viktor to forget his past prove too much for them. The story is complicated by politics, war, and murder; their love and loyalty tested after they finally reunite on opposite sides.
