Dr. Velarde presents in this book a realistic perspective of the role technology, in particular artificial intelligence (AI), is playing and will play in our lives both at a personal level and at the society level. Instead of focusing only on the potential dilemmas of general artificial intelligence, she discusses important topics including the need for national and international strategies for AI development, as well as the consequences of developing biased AI models in a world with large inequalities (gender, racial, class, etc.).
Gissel Velarde obtained a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the prestigious Aalborg University, Denmark. She also holds a Master's degree in Electronic Systems and Engineering Management from the University of Applied Sciences Südwestfalen in Soest, Germany, and a Licenciatura's degree in Systems Engineering from the Universidad Católica Boliviana, La Paz. Velarde has over twenty years of experience in Engineering and Computer Science, both in Academia and Industry. In 2020, she was named "Notable Woman" by the diversity promotion committee of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval. Among several awards, she received a teaching award in 2021 for her lecture and her students' learning outcomes on Selected Topics in Artificial Intelligence at Universidad Privada Boliviana
