Modern universities in Iraq were established in the second half of the last century, beginning with the University of Baghdad in 1957 uniting several constituent colleges in the process, during the 1960's five more universities were established: The University of Technology and Al-Mustansriya University in Baghdad as well as universities in Basrah, Mousal, and Sulaymania. During the last 25 years, the policy of establishing a university in each governorate responded to both the demands of equity to both the growing demands of higher education. Thus, there is wide range in the size of universities as well as a lack of geographic equity, in their distribution across the country. Rehabilitation of universities, colleges, according to international levels is required.
