Around the World is a memoir of retired U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Edward Leo Semler Jr's over 25 year career in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard. He details his assignment which range from 1982 until 2007. Anyone who has ever served in the military can easily relate to his stories and the events that unfold as he matures and progresses through his career. And hopefully they bring back fond memories of your service. In the Army he was an enlisted man and obtained the rank of specialist four (E-4). He served with the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Pelham, Korea on the DMZ and the 5th Infantry Division at Fort Polk, Louisiana. While in Korea he deployed for Team Spirit in 1983 and attended the Republic of Korea Ranger School. He details the tensions along the DMZ during events such as the downing of KAL flight 007 and President Ronald Reagan's historic visit. While in Louisiana he deployed to Germany for REFORGER in 1984. In the Coast Guard he was an enlisted man obtaining the rank of master chief petty officer (E-9), was commissioned as an officer, and retired as a lieutenant (0-3E). He served at several shore stations and afloat in the Sumac (WLR-311), Seneca (WMEC-906), Tampa (WMEC-902), Eagle (WIX-327), Sherman (WHEC-720), and Dependable (WMEC-626). In Eagle he sailed on her summer 1998 cruise. In 1999, as a senior chief petty officer (E-8), he attended the U.S. Air Force Senior Non-commissioned Officer Academy. While in the Sherman he held the position of command enlisted advisor and made her historic deployment to the Persian Gulf and circumnavigation of the globe in 2001. He details the Coast Guards mission in the Persian Gulf to enforce United Nations sanctions, boarding suspected oil smuggling vessels, and the sinking of the M/V Zainab. In Dependable, as an officer, he served as the assistant engineering officer (AEO) and damage control assistant (DCA). During his tour aboard the "Mighty D" he details illegal migrant operations and numerous multi-million dollar drug busts to include the $274 million dollars in drugs found aboard the M/V Miss Mery Hill.
