Jacques Derrida, geb. 1930 in El-Biar in der Nähe von Algier als Sohn jüdischer Eltern, war während seiner Schulzeit antisemitischen Repressionen ausgesetzt. Ab 1949 lebte er in Frankreich und besuchte das Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. Von 1952 bis 1954 studierte er an der École Normale Supérieure, wo er Vorlesungen bei Louis Althusser und Michel Foucault besuchte und sich mit Pierre Bourdieu anfreundete. 1956 gewann er ein Stipendium für einen Studienaufenthalt an der Harvard University. Während seines Militärdienstes von 1957 bis 1959 lehrte er Englisch und Französisch in Algerien. Von 1960 bis 1964 war er wissenschaftlicher Assistent an der Sorbonne. Ab 1965 bis 1984 bekleidete er eine Professur für Geschichte der Philosophie an der École Normale Supérieure. 1981 gründete er die Gesellschaft Jan Hus (eine Hilfsorganisation für verfolgte tschechische Intellektuelle). Im selben Jahr wurde er in Prag verhaftet und erst nach einer energischen Intervention François Mitterrands und der französischen Regierung von der Tschechoslowakei freigelassen. 1983 gründete er das Collège international de philosophie , zu dessen erstem Direktor er gewählt wurde. Jacques Derrida starb im Jahr 2004 in Paris
