This book is the result of the field study of birds for the last thirty two years. Birds are the crowning glory of India's rich fauna. Omnipresent and colorful, they have permeated every facet of Indian life; its culture, its economy, its philosophy, even its politics. The Indian subcontinent has a great wealth of birds, making it a paradise for the birdwatcher because of its wide attitudinal range extending from sea level up to the summit of the Himalayas, the World's highest mountains. They have their functional role in ecosystem as potential pollinators and scavenger, indeed rightly called bio-indicators. India is unique in having a variety of biomes as it is located in the tropics at the zone confluence of three major bio-geographical realms viz. the Indo Malayan (South and South-East Asia), Pale arctic (Europe and Northern Asia) and Afro tropical (Africa) realms. It is because of this diversity that India has a rich biological heritage comprising nearly 8100 species including 340 species of mammals, 1250 species of birds, 420 species of reptiles and 142 species of amphibians .
