Wide band gap semiconductor Zinc Oxide is ofsignificant interest for use in blue LEDs, shortwavelength laser diodes, high temperature and powerdevices, and transparent conductive oxides. Polarc-axis oriented Zinc Oxide and its alloy MagnesiumZinc Oxide based heterostructures and quantum wellshave been developed. These heterostructures andquantum wells however suffer from limited quantumefficiency due piezoelectric and spontaneouspolarization fields. The use of non-polar a-axis andm-axis oriented films has thus gained importance fordevelopment of high quantum efficiency structures. The non-polar films however possess in-planestructural, optical, electrical and acousticanisotropic properties. Though some of theseproperties maybe advantageous for development ofnovel electronic, optical and acoustic devices, others might be detrimental to development ofnon-polar heterostructures and quantum wells.Currently, only limited information is available ofstudy and control of these anisotropic properties. This book presents MOCVD growth optimization andcomprehensive characterizations of anisotropicproperties of a-plane Zinc Oxide and Magnesium ZincOxide thin films.
