In this work of historical fiction, sixteen-year-old Cameron experiences, not only adventure, but a major piece of the history of a very horrific part of our American heritage. The War Between the States was a unique war in that brother was pitted against brother, forced to take a stand; many times, whether it was their intent or not. The Civil War, along with the variables that brought it about however, has helped to define this country of ours. It has taken many years to clean the wound left behind that it might heal. Though it was unfortunate, to say the least, there is much to be gleaned from the scar it left on the face that serves as a reminder of the sacrifices of those who paid the ultimate price to help build these United States. Relatively speaking, we are still a young nation, and we do well to understand that, in our adolescence perhaps, there are still things to be learned, and we have not yet arrived. Hopefully, we might learn the lessons paid for by our forefathers; signed in their own blood. We do well also, if we conclude, as others in our nation's past have had to, that we are only 'indivisible' if we are a nation 'Under God'.
