With the rise in population of the aged people throughout the world. concern and care of the aged have attracted global attention of the scientists and the administrators. As per decision of the united Nation Organisations, the year 1982 was observed as the International year for the aged to highlight the problems of ageing. The aged people and their problems exist right from the beginning of human civilization. Donahue is correct in concluding that ever since the origin of life,the process of ageing has played a tremendous role in evolution. However, ageing has been perceived as a social problem and studied by the social scientists in years not far back. The data reveals that the rate of increase of population In 60+ age group is higher than the rate of increase in the general population.Population statistics indicate that not only the population of the aged people has gone up in the last two decades rather the percentage of old age people (particularly in 60+ group) in comparison to the general population has also increased. With better medical facilities this is likely to improve even more. The marvels of science have no doubt lowered the death rate and added quite a few years.
