Selenate removal from wastewater with co-contaminants have not been properly investigated in biological process systems using mixed consortia. This research addressed the effect of wastewater characteristics (co-contaminants and pH) on the biological reduction of selenate. It was demonstrated that the presence of co-contaminants was beneficial for selenium removal provided careful monitoring of concentrations and appropriate treatment, operation and configurations are used. This research provides insight for the advancement of biological treatment of selenium-laden wastewater such as predicting of reactor performance, solving practical problems and implementing novel treatment techniques.
