In the resulting psychological and cultural displacement, Abbas gets shot and becomes involved with an African-American woman, Marianne. Buba becomes a drug addict and is in trouble with the police in spite of Freda, a white woman, as Gimba's confidence in women wavers, until Sophia gets to him. Among the Promise Keepers explores the common humanity the binds White, Black and Brown in circumstances that supersede race and colour.
