In the past people flocked to go to America to breathe life and freedom. Now too people seek to go there to earn their bread and to realize their dreams. No doubt in the future also citizens of other nations will dare to relinquish their citizenship to become an American. A nation built from scratch by immigrants is open to new immigrants to become part of a 'melting pot' or 'salad bowl'. America keeps its edge in science, technology and world-politics by admitting immigrants from nations that are even inimical to it. It is home to a generation of populations who were or are rooted elsewhere. These populations make what America is today. Of late there is a discussion going on whether America will weather the storms created by economic downslide and China. It can, only if the legacy is observed uninterrupted. It is the legacy of selective immigration.
