This book discusses the enhanced non-contiguous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM), filter-bank based multicarrier (FBMC), and generalized multicarrier (GMC) flexibility. It examines particular properties of these technologies that allow for spectrum aggregation and opportunistic and efficient spectrum usage within the identified key directions of 5G. This book contains six chapters. Chapter 1 presents state-of-the-art multicarrier technologies for radio communication. Chapter 2 introduces the principles of NC-OFDM and discusses efficient NC-OFDM transmitter and receiver design. Chapter 3 presents the principles of FBMC modulation. This chapter discusses key challenges for FBMC communications and compares the performance results with traditional OFDM. Chapter 4 introduces GMC modulation. It shows that GMC encompasses all other previously discussed techniques (OFDM, NC-OFDM, FBMC), as well as all theoretically imaginable multi- and single-carrier waveforms. The performance will be again compared with the conventional OFDM. Next, Chapter 5 discusses radio resource management and sharing options for the future multicarrier technologies meeting the desired features of 5G communications. Finally, Chapter 6 summarizes key observations and discusses the future outlook for presented technologies in terms of their greater industrial realization, hardware practicality and other challenges.
