What are the language and literacy practices ofadolescents as they engage in instant messaging inthe 21st century? The research described in this bookworks to build an understanding of what youth aredoing when they are online. To do so, Jacobs draws ontwo years of ethnographic data, including videotapesof the actual in-the-moment construction of instantmessages as well as what was happening in the roomdoing those online sessions. She uses CriticalDiscourse Analysis and Cultural Historical ActivityTheory to make sense of the data and argues thatinstant messaging is a dynamic and fluid activityconsisting of a mix of conventions. Macro-analysisindicates that the outcome of engagement in instantmessaging is the construction of a person who isadept at developing the skills, attributes, andachievements necessary for success in the 21stcentury economy.
