Increasing attention is being paid in recent years to exploit the biotechnological potential of algal biomass as a source of industrially valuable compounds. Among such commercial ventures, mass production of some halotolerant algae other than Dunaliella for production of the fine chemicals, especially beta-carotene, glycerol and lipids. It has been shown that these algae accumulate a high amount of these chemicals when grown under abiotic stress, such as light intensity, salt concentrations, temperature and nutrient deficiencies.
