Kendra Albright and Karen Gavigan of the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science have collaborated with incarcerated teens at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (SCDJJ) to collectively author AIDS in the Endzone, a graphic novella aimed at educating teens about AIDS awareness and prevention.
Albright and Gavigan began this project in response to research indicating that the graphic novel format was a highly successful educational tool when broaching public health and sexuality topics with teens. This specific topic was selected because South Carolina ranks eighth in the nation for new HIV cases, while the capital city of Columbia ranks sixth nationally among metropolitan areas. By working with teen students at the SCDJJ, Albright and Gavigan were able to develop characters, a storyline, setting, and dialog as a collaborative project--engaging the students in the public health subject matter as well as in the creative process. Illustrator Sarah Petrulis was contracted to provide the art for the novella, which depicts a new quarterback's first days at the fictional Marina High School as his rivalry with another student leads to a life-changing encounter with an HIV-positive character.
AIDS in the Endzone has already been the subject of local and national media attention, including a New York Times feature article, for its innovative approach to addressing the issue of HIV/AIDS education. Albright's and Gavigan's research and development of this project has been funded in part by a grant from the Association for Library and Information Science Education.
