The area of study of this thesis is to develop a mobile application ("app") that runs on the Android operating system. The application, named NatiV, is designed to enable Shona learners to be motivated to acquire foundation proficiency in Shona by helping the learners associate sounds to their respective syllables. The thesis also discusses the Shona language - its importance and the relevance of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the way it is learned. One hypothesis is that languages can be preserved using ICT, more specifically through mobile technology. The NatiV app is also created as a preservation tool and a response to the United Nations Declaration on mother tongue education. NatiV also teaches early learners how to read and write, thus providing the foundation of actual language learning. The projections surfacing from the conclusions lean towards diversifying m-learning (mobile learning) to other languages and lexicography in general.
