An Experimental investigation is done to find the performance and emission characteristics of a computerized single cylinder 4 -stroke diesel engine using diesel and Mahua biodiesel blends in the proportions of 30%,40% and 50%. The results are compared with plain diesel. Mahua biodiesel is produced from Mahua oil by acid catalyzed and base catalyzed methods. By using mahua biodiesel blends the brake thermal efficiency increases and the HC, CO emissions are reduced. But the brake specific fuel consumption is increasing and NOx emissions are increasing. Among these three blends 50% Mahua biodiesel blend gives best results rather than remaining blends. To overcome the problems with biodiesel nanoparticles are choosed as additives. With B50 bio diesel blend nano particles Al2O3 and ZnO are used as additives in the ratio of 100ppm and tests are conducted. By the addition of nano additives to biodiesel blend, % CO and HC emissions are reduced with increasing load, brake thermal efficiency increases and brake specific fuel consumption decreases with increasing load. NOx emissions are increased slightly.
