AIDS is a retro-viral disease caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The disease is characterized by immunosuppression, secondary neoplasms and neurological manifestations. AIDS is invariably fatal since there is no cure. The objectives of the study were the study various biochemical parameters in HIV positive patients. The mean serum total bilirubin, serum alkaline phosphatase, serum aminotransferases, serum gamma glutamyl transferase, serum lactate dehydrogenase, serum total protein and serum globulin in HIV positive patients were significantly increased as compared to controls. However the levels of serum albumin were decreased, resulting in reversal of A/G ratio in HIV positive cases. Clinicians are often required to evaluate patients with HIV disease who have abnormalities of their liver function tests. Clinicians can treat lymphoma, mycobacterium avium intercellulare and cytomegalovirus; and liver function tests may help in diagnosing these liver diseases in patients infected with HIV
