This Book shows how Bio-inspired design or biomimetics is a promising approach for the development of innovative technical products - not only in mechanical engineering but also in areas such as material science and even computer engineering. Recently developed products such as the diving robot Snookie with a bio-inspired orientation system have shown the potential of bio-inspired design. Likewise, new internet platforms (e.g. asknature.org) showcase a selection of biological systems that product developers can use for inspiration. However, in industrial companies, bio-inspired design remains an "exotic" approach which is rarely used in innovation practice. One reason for this might be a lack of knowledge on how to implement bio-inspired design in practice: Even though a number of researchers have developed processes, methods and tools for bio-inspired design, there is no up-to date guide book summarizing the findings from German and international researchers. Moreover, no book on bio-inspired design integrates processes, methods and tools into applicable procedures for engineers and biologists in practice.
