This book, a novella, switching between high adventure, horror, and even fantasy, takes its cue from three sea-based man against monster battles: the tales told by Melville, Hemingway and Benchley; - the story also takes some inspiration from historical descriptions of spiritual outsider life in late antiquity. All this and more provides the background layering for the canvas across which "A Man and his Island" is painted. Though the unnamed adversaries in the clashes here delineated may conjure up images of Ahab, Santiago and Quint, these three are perhaps only distant relatives of the man on his island. The strange recluse of this story seems closer to the fevered hermit, taking the body to its hallucinatory limit, part self exiled saint, part athlete.
