Rudi Weissenstein (1910 - 1992) was the most prominent chronicler of everyday life in the young state of Israel and his photographs are essential to understanding the country's social history. Primarily taken between the 1930s and the 1970s, Weissenstein's photographs capture a multifaceted Israel during the early years of its formation. After taking over Pri-Or PhotoHouse in Tel Aviv in 1940 he developed it into a renowned cultural institution and created the largest private photo archive in Israel, containing more than one million negatives. It is now run by Weissenstein's grandson Ben Peter, one of the editors of this book.
