Sport psychologists have led performance enhancement research for decades, investigating all aspects of the mental side of preparation, training, optimal excellence, and performing "in the zone." The results of 15 professional vocalists in depth interviews answer the Four Ws of Imagery Use questions: when, where, what, and why. Dr. Bowes provides and organizes these singers extensive and detailed personal accounts of using imagery in training, practice, stage performance, and characterization efforts. Examples of imagery uses include: perfecting vocal production and quality, embodying the characters emotional aspects for performance, modifying performance anxiety, visualizing metaphorical and anatomical images in attaining automaticity, achieving goals, and communicating with the audience. Patricia Bowes began stage singing at age 4 and has sung jazz, musical theatre, opera, and sacred music professionally for decades. Dr. Bowes holds degrees in theatre, fine art, and music including a Ph.D. in Music Education. She has taught the arts from early childhood to old age in schools and universities.
