One of the established strengths of human tutors istheir ability to recognise and adapt to the emotionsof students. This is a skill that has traditionallybeen lacking from Intelligent Tutoring Systems(ITSs); despite their ability to intelligently modeland adapt to aspects of the students cognitivestate, ITSs are generally completely unable to detector adapt to aspects of the students affective state. In response to this shortcoming, this book exploresthe exciting development of an emotion-sensitiveITS. With the empathy of effective human tutors asour blueprint, we investigate how an artificial tutorshould adapt to the affective state of students. Toinform the tutors adaptation to student affect, anovel method for student modelling andemotion-sensitive tutoring strategies has beendeveloped using a fuzzy, case-based reasoningapproach. As a validation of the feasibility of anemotion-sensitive tutoring system, we implement andtest our method in an Affective Tutoring System (ATS)for counting and addition, Easy with Eve, featuringan empathetic animated pedagogical agent, Eve.
