Customary norms, traditions, ignorance of inheritance rights and lack of economic empowerment among other factors form the contemporary impediments to women's inheritance. These practices place much value on male superiority and dominance by patriarchy thereby reducing women to inferior human beings and heritable properties. Although our courts of law have made pronouncements that women should inherit and there are also statutory backups to women's inheritance like domestic laws and international treaties, the fundamental question is: How many women are aware of these rights and to what extent are these laws enforceable especially in the Imo State of Nigeria? The answer to these questions shows that while a respondent population of about 98% are unaware of the existence of these rights, there is zero compliance from law enforcement agencies towards the enforceability of these rights hence women are still grossly being disinherited.
