Bionics means learning from the nature for the development of technology. The science of "bionics" itself is classified into several sections, from materials and structures over procedures and processes until evolution and optimization.Not all these areas, oronly a few, are really known in the public and also in scientific literature. This includes the Lotus-effect, convertedto the contamination-reduction of fassades and the shark-shed-effect, convertedto theresistance-reduction of airplanes. However, there are hundreds of highly interesting examples that contain the transformation of principles of the nature into technology. Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Werner Nachtigall, geb. 1934, hat mit seiner Sichtweise der 'Technischen Biologie und Bionik' als weltweit anerkannte Autorität Biologie und Technik zusammengeführt. Sein spezielles, fachübergreifendes Interesse gilt bionischen und umweltrelevanten Aspekten im Bereich des Bauens, Konstruierens und Gestaltens. Er ist Autor von über 30 Büchern und 300 Fachpublikationen, Mitglied mehrerer wissenschaftlicher Gesellschaften und Träger meherer Preise. Er hat eine Gesellschaft für Technische Biologie und Bionik gegründet, deren 1. Vorsitzender er ist, sowie eine gleichnamige Ausbildungsrichtung für Diplombiologen. Weiter war er maßgeblich am Zustandekommen des Bionik-Kompetenznetzes BioKon beteiligt. Seit seiner Emeritierung 2002 widmet er sich weiter Fragen der Bionik, des funktionellen Gestaltens, der Industrie-Kultur und der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit.
