They talk about the alcoholic having to "hit bottom" before he is willing to find help. Ironically, I also found this to be true for anyone in an alcoholic relationship. My bottom came when I was lying alone in bed one night -- throwing up in a cooking pot, raging with fever. I attempted to call my husband for help, but he hung up on me and then, turned off his phone. 10:00 rolled around. I thought I was dying. Oh, when would he get home? Even if he were drunk, he could still help me. 11:00. 12:00. Still no one. I finally gave up waiting and called my parents, who lived about an hour and a half away. Thankfully, they drove up in the middle of the night to rescue me. I rode back to their house that night in my pajamas, snuggled tightly in my blanket in the back seat of their car; so, I could be "cared for properly." The amazing part of this story is that my husband called me the next morning to ask if I had fed the dogs that morning. He never had gone home that night. He didn't even realize I was gone. Seriously? That was my lowest point. I knew that something had to change, or else I would very likely go insane. Our married life was filled with one dramatic scene after another. Fights. Alcohol. Little sleep. Drugs. Cops. Other women. I had turned into an emotional mess. He said I was crazy. Maybe, he was right. All I knew is that I needed help. I couldn't keep living this way. These events are what led me to a desperate search for answers. This book is the result of many hours of searching to understand alcoholism through a Biblical point-of-view, going to AA and Al-Anon meetings, speaking with top alcoholism counselors and people in the same situation, and extensive literary research. It is the finished product of my quest for sanity. It is my prayer that his informative book will empower you to regain the peace you are longing for through a process of understanding, letting go, and regaining control over your life. It did me.
