Gus returned from vacation to his small rural county wanting nothing else but to return to the dull routine of his everyday life as local sheriff. Unfortunately he returned home to find there is nothing dull or routine about the current situation of the county or his life; his daughter has returned from the West Coast with her lesbian fiancee in tow, a couple of rich environmentalist hipsters from the Make A Difference Foundation have moved into the county to annoy him with the idea of causes, a dandy state representative from up north has decided now is the best time to enact gun control legislation, and two natural gas drilling companies have started an outright bidding war over drilling rights in the ranchland. All that nonsense might have been tolerable since as far as Gus is concerned in reality nothing ever changes no matter how much the people worry and fret that it does, but Gus is forced to act when someone decides now is a good time to start shooting and a couple dead bodies get thrown into the fray. Gus finds himself once again sorting his way through the counties many odd facets; from the stale pathos of local politics to the red hot passions of gun enthusiasts, environmental activists, drug dealers, and corporate executives. Along the way Gus finds himself discovering not only his long lost convictions, sympathy, but also an unusual rogues gallery of suspects. There is nothing so routine about this world but its constant uncertainty and volatility."
