Distinguished physicians critically review the clinical consequences of the endocrinological changes that occur with aging-in both men and women-and examine the use of hormonal therapy to reduce them. Topics range from bone disease and water balance in all older people, to androgen deficiency in aging males, gynecomastia, and menopause. The authors also discuss Type II diabetes in persons over 65, emphasizing the cognitive benefits of good glycemia control, and the interaction of nutrition and metabolism, focusing on hypocholesterolemia, obesity, the anorexia of aging, trace elements, and vitamins. The aging of the sympathetic nervous system and its impact on hypertension in the elderly is also covered. Timely and authoritative, Endocrinology of Aging offers endocrinologists, geriatricians, and primary care physicians critical insight into the endocrine problems of our rapidly growing elderly population.

Bibliografia

"...a book on the endocrinology of aging is timely and of interest to a wide audience. This multiauthored book is heterogeneous in content and message. Many, though not all, of the endocrine systems are covered, and forays into areas not strictly endocrine in nature, such as obesity. Paget's disease, nutrition, and the sympathetic nervous system, are included...The book clearly illuminates the difficulty of separating functional impairment caused by age itself from that resulting from disease and the intertwined relation between the two...The prevalence of diseases, manifestations, diagnosis, and therapy are discussed in the context of the elderly, and much practical information is imparted. In this role, the book serves well the general internist or primary care physician who wants to learn about illnesses of the elderly and their medical management...There is very little overlap between chapters. The information given is up to date and extensively referenced. Overall, the book provides a useful overview of what is known about normal and abnormal changes in the endocrine system in the elderly, their clinical manifestations, and appropriate therapy...Endocrinology of the Aging,, by its very heterogeneity, aptly illustrates the continuum between health and disease and provides some practical advice on the way. I recommend it to general internists and practicing geriatricians..."-The New England Journal of Medicine

"...The book includes an intriguing discussion of Tithonusism (the 'inexorable physiological deterioration' associated with aging) and its potential reversal with hormone replacement. There are thoughtful expositions on the 'diseases of aging,' including osteoporosis; body composition changes with obesity and sarcopenia; and the climacteric. The chapters on the presentation and management of endocrine disorders in elderly persons are excellent, as are the discussions of the stress response and water balance. Most chapters include useful guidelines for clinicians. Summary contents of each chapter standardize the presentation...Morley and van den Berg's book is the most current and is well balanced for a broad audience of clinicians and investigators."-Annals of Internal Medicine

"...Endocrinology of Aging is a comprehensive, multiauthor book and in 16 chapters covers topics ranging from biological theories of aging to the metabolic and cardiovascular factors contributing to hypertension...All chapters discuss current treatment recommendations and provide and up-to-date reference section...It is an easy-to-read, well-structured, and informative book which overall gives a well-balanced view of this increasingly important topic. It should find its place in bookshelves not only of geriatricians and endocrinologists, but also of internists, gynecologists, urologists, general practitioners, and all the people who are confronted with elderly people searching for the fountain of youth."-The Lancet

"Finally, the writing style is wonderfully accessible. I felt as though I was having a conversation with an expert, not reading an academic text." -Geriatrics & Aging

"...an excellent and timely discussion of the endocrine changes associated with aging and the potential for therapeutic intervention. This unequaled volume contains 16 chapters, including 2 introductory chapters that deal with biological theories of aging and the physiological and endocrine changes associated with human aging. ...the book is outstanding, immensely easy to read, well balanced, and an important resource for physicians, gerontologist, and basic research scientists."-Quarterly Review of Biology

Dr. John E. Morley, known internationally as a gerontological researcher, clinician, and educator, became the Director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and the Dammert Professor of Gerontology. In addition to extensive personal scientific achievements, Dr. Morley has directed the clinical training programs in both endocrinology and geriatrics and supervised research activities ranging from basic biomedical investigation to epidemiology and health services research. He is the editor of the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, and recipient of the Ipsen Foundation of Longevity Award in 2001, the American Geriatrics Society's Lascher/Manning Award for Lifetime Achievement in Geriatrics in 2002, and the Gerontological Society of America's Freeman Award in 2004. He has developed a number of educational games and has a special interest in continuous quality improvement (CQI).
