Hollon also includes the story of the wooing and winning of Mary Ellen Marcy by young Lieutenant George B. McClellan, who was to become his father-in-law's commanding officer during the Civil War and Lincoln's opponent in the 1864 election. W. Eugene Hollon was Professor of History at the University of Oklahoma and Ohio Regents Professor of History, University of Toledo. He wrote many books on the American West, including The Lost Pathfinder: Zebulon Montgomery Pike.
