It is to John Heritage s great credit that he has sifted the wheat from the chaff. He has given us a clear exposition of the intellectual antecedents of Garfinkel s work–notably Husserl, Schutz, and Mannheim–and of its affinities with Wittgenstein and ordinary language philosophy. John Heritage is Professor of Sociology at UCLA. He is the coeditor (with J.M. Atkinson) of Structures of Social Action: Studies in Conversation Analysis and is currently researching on televised political communication.
