This book attempts to define the relationship between gender and international security, analyzing and critiquing international security theory and practice from a gendered perspective. The common theme running through the essays is that gender matters in the theory and practice of international security in three main ways: it is necessary, conceptually, for understanding international security; it is important in analyzing causes and predicting outcomes; and it is essential to thinking about solutions and promoting positive change in the security realm. Each chapter demonstrates these points through case studies, theoretical analysis, evidence, and examples. If gender analysis is crucial to international security, however, the discipline of IR does not reflect this. Gender in security is undertheorized, and scholars would benefit from productive conversations to explain and understand the role of gender in shaping global security, as well as how gender is conceptually and empirically affected by global security. This book aims to jumpstart and set the tone for that discussion.
