3D shaped fabrics are widely used for producingtechnical applications including textile composites, medical textiles, and protective textiles. Textileengineers and material scientists have developed 3Dtextile preforms for composites, which are becomingmore popular in many areas due to their light weight, dimensional stability, and high strength properties.Architecture of a textile preform can vary from asimple planar sheet to complex 3D shell shapes. Thisbook aims to exploit the potentials of conventionallooms for producing dome-shaped fabrics for technicalapplications, such as protective helmet, aircraftseat, motorcycle seat, and bullet-proof vest forwomen. Second objective of this research is todevelop methods for evaluating the dome effect offabrics. A dome tester has been developed in theresearch with the capability of measuring the domeformability and also the fabric mouldability. Theresults of both evaluation methods for the domeformability revealed that loose fabric structureslead to better dome formability for all fabric types. The results also showed that increasing the number oflayers for the multi-layer fabrics has produced lessobvious dome effects.
