'The first poet in the world in some things', is how John Donne was described by his contemporary Ben Jonson. Yet it is only this century that Donne has been indisputably established as a great poet--and even, many feel, the greatest love poet of them all. Jonson went on to remark that 'That Donne, for not keeping of an accent, deserved hanging', yet Donne's rhythms, once thought 'unmusical' are now recognized as the natural rhythms of the speaking voice; his 'eccentricity' as a complex self-doubt; his 'obscurity' the reflection of a brilliantly learned and allusive mind. Poets...

A new selection spanning the breadth of Donne's verse
One of England's preeminent poets, John Donne's poems are among the most passionate, profound, and spiritual in the English language. This rich representation reflects the wide diversity of his poetry. From such witty items as "The Flea," which transforms the image of a louse into something marvelous, to the intimate and intense Holy Sonnets, Donne breathed new vigor into poetry by drawing lucid and often startling metaphors from the world in which he lived.

There is perhaps no superior edition of Donne's Songs and Sonets than Theodore Redpath's wonderful annotated volume. Out of print for a decade, the book is reprinted here in its second, revised edition. The book's twofold origin is evident on every page of Redpath's limpid commentary: it arises partly out of a life of scholarship and partly from Redpath's experiences and concerns as a teacher. The volume contains notes "on every point likely to cause difficulty to a reader of average intelligence."

This selection of John Donne's most powerful prose shows that the man remembered predominantly for his poetry was also a preacher, and a prose writer of extraordinary power. In it, he explores the metaphysical collision between poetry and religion, suicide and duty, the secular and the spiritual that characterized his times. It is edited with an introduction and notes by Neil Rhodes.

Three of the major Metaphysical poets are featured in this anthology: John Donne, Robert Herrick and Henry Vaughan.
JOHN DONNE was, Robert Graves said, a 'Muse poet', a poet who wrote passionately of the Muse. It is easy to see Donne as a love poet, in the tradition of love poets such as Bernard de Ventadour, Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarch and Torquato Tasso. Donne has written his fair share of love poems. There are the bawdy allusions to the phallus in...
