The book of Acts describes the Holy Spirit's working in the early church which resulted in its spread throughout the known world. On the Day of Pentecost, he appeared as tongues of flame on each member of the church, empowering them to witness to a vast multitude who spoke many different languages and be heard in the individual languages. That same power depicted by the flame inspired the Christians to go to other areas and preach the gospel spreading churches everywhere.
