Evil and Moral Psychology

Peter Brian Barry

This book examines what makes someone an evil person and how evil people are different from merely bad people. Rather than focusing on the "problem of evil" that occupies philosophers of religion, Barry looks instead to moral psychology-the intersection of ethics and psychology. He provides both a philosophical account of what evil people are like and considers the implications of that account for social, legal, and criminal institutions. He also engages in traditional philosophical reasoning strongly informed by psychological research, especially abnormal and social psychology.

Aristotelian Ethics in Contemporary Perspective

Julia Peters

By bringing together influential critics of neo-Aristotelian virtue ethics and some of the strongest defenders of an Aristotelian approach, this collection provides a fresh assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of Aristotelian virtue ethics and its contemporary interpretations. Contributors critically discuss and re-assess the neo-Aristotelian paradigm which has been predominant in the philosophical discourse on virtue for the past 30 years.

The Contradictions of Modern Moral Philosophy: Ethics After Wittgenstein

Paul Johnston; Paul Johnston
This critique of contemporary moral theory examines whether we can make correct judgements. It discusses the divisions within moral philosophy and shows how recent moral philosophy consists of unsuccessful attempts to eliminate this contradiction.

Modern Honor: A Philosophical Defense

Anthony Cunningham

This book examines the notion of honor with an eye to dissecting its intellectual demise and with the aim of making a case for honor's rehabilitation. Western intellectuals acknowledge honor's influence, but they lament its authority. For Western democratic societies to embrace honor, it must be compatible with social ideals like liberty, equality, and fraternity. Cunningham details a conception of honor that can do justice to these ideals. This vision revolves around three elements-character (being), relationships (relating), and activities and accomplishment (doing). Taken together,...

Defending Associative Duties

Jonathan Seglow

This book explores the associative duties we owe to our children, parents, friends, colleagues, associates and compatriots and defends a novel account which justifies such duties through the realization of values that are produced in these various kinds of social relationships. Seglow engages with several key contemporary debates including parental rights over children's education, the burdens of eldercare, permissible partiality to friends, and global justice versus compatriot duties.

Consequentialism and Environmental Ethics

Avram Hiller; Ramona Ilea; Leonard Kahn

This volume works to connect issues in environmental ethics with the best work in contemporary normative theory. Environmental issues challenge contemporary ethical theorists to account for topics that traditional ethical theories do not address to any significant extent. This book articulates and evaluates consequentialist responses to that challenge. Contributors provide a thorough and well-rounded analysis of the benefits and limitations of the consequentialist perspective in addressing environmental issues. In particular, the contributors use consequentialist theory to address central...

Eudaimonic Ethics: The Philosophy and Psychology of Living Well

Lorraine Besser-Jones

In this book," "Lorraine Besser-Jones develops a eudaimonistic virtue ethics based on a psychological account of human nature. While her project maintains the fundamental features of the eudaimonistic virtue ethical framework virtue, character, and well-being she constructs these concepts from an empirical basis, drawing support from the psychological fields of self-determination and self-regulation theory. Besser-Jones s resulting account of "eudaimonic ethics" presents a compelling normative theory and offers insight into what is involved in being a virtuous person and "acting well."...

Caste Wars: A Philosophy of Discrimination

David Edmonds
The central topic for this book is the ethics of treating individuals as though they are members of groups. The book raises many interesting questions, including: Why do we feel so much more strongly about discrimination on certain grounds - e.g. of race and sex - than discrimination on other grounds? Are we right to think that discrimination based on these characteristics is especially invidious? What should we think about 'rational discrimination' - 'discrimination' which is based on sound statistics? To take just one of dozens of examples from the book. Suppose a landlord turns away a...

The Philosophy and Psychology of Character and Happiness

Nancy E. Snow; Franco Trivigno
Since ancient times, character, virtue, and happiness have been central to thinking about how to live well. Yet until recently, philosophers have thought about these topics in an empirical vacuum. Taking up the general challenge of situationism - that philosophers should pay attention to empirical psychology - this interdisciplinary volume presents new essays from empirically informed perspectives by philosophers and psychologists on western as well as eastern conceptions of character, virtue, and happiness, and related issues such as personality, emotion and cognition, attitudes and...

Moral Responsibility and the Problem of Many Hands

Ibo Poel Van De; Ibo Van De Poel; Lamber Royakkers

When many people are involved in an activity, it is often difficult, if not impossible, to pinpoint who is morally responsible for what, a phenomenon known as the 'problem of many hands.' This term is increasingly used to describe problems with attributing individual responsibility in collective settings in such diverse areas as public administration, corporate management, law and regulation, technological development and innovation, healthcare, and finance. This volume provides an in-depth philosophical analysis of this problem, examining the notion of moral responsibility and...
