This volume contains original research papers presented at a seminar given at the Technical University of Vienna. Contributors discussed methods drawn originally from number theory but applied now to numerical analysis, discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science.

In the English edition, the chapter on the Geometry of Numbers has been enlarged to include the important findings of H. Lenstraj furthermore, tried and tested examples and exercises have been included. The translator, Prof. Charles Thomas, has solved the difficult problem of the German text into English in an admirable way. He deserves transferring our 'Unreserved praise and special thailks. Edmund Hlawka is a leading number theorist whose work has had a lasting influence on modern number theory and other branches of mathematics.
