Richard L. Davis is chair of East Asian Studies and a professor of history at Brown University. His books include "Wind Against the Mountain: The Crisis of Politics and Culture in Thirteenth Century China" and "Court and Family in Sung China, 960-1279," as well as several chapters in a forthcoming volume of the "Cambridge History of China, Vol. 5." He lives in Providence, Rhode Island.
