Marne Leroy Mercer was named by his father Ammon after the second battle of the Marne in WW I and Ammon's best friend Leroy, killed in the battle of Vimy Ridge. In WWII Marne was destined to cross the Marne River with the 40th Field Artillery group, fighting their way across Europe to defeat the Nazis.
