Scalp Dance, A Sam Chitto Mystery evolved naturally for Lu Clifton as she was born in and spent her early childhood in southeastern Oklahoma. While not a member of any nation, she has Choctaw and Cherokee ancestors in her maternal and paternal lines and a long-standing interest in Native American myth and folklore.
